Air Power in Korea
October 19th, 1950
The Korean War was the first time for major military combat between jet aircraft. Both bombers and fighters from the US flew out from Japan to North Korea. At first, they had no opposition, and were able to destroy Communist bases, kill enemy troops, and support Allied troops from the air. The United States supplied 150 F-86 Sabre Jets, and also had the B 0 26 Night Intruder, which flew at night and use radar to drop bombs on supply lines, such in "Operation Strangle" in 1951-52, and could fly in any type of weather. Soon the Russians responded by supporting the North Koreans with MIG-15. Dogfights took place over North Korea. The Allied planes were not allowed to fly across the Yalu River, while the M16 were not allowed over the 38 Parallel. This meant that a majority of the dogfights happened in "M16 Alley", between the Yalu River and Pyongyang.
Pyongyang was the Capital of North Korea, and at that time a modern city with street cars. By October 19, 1950, Pyongyang was destroyed by US air forces. The city was bombed out of existence, not a single building was left undamaged. Those who survived fled to the country areas The power of these modern machines have been shown to be very effective and deadly.
